DIY disco lights: four phones on a shelf casting violet, pink, green and turquoise light onto the wall

DIY Disco Lights: How to Make Disco Lights at Home with Your Phone in 7 Steps

Short answer: You can make DIY disco lights with what you already have: phones, a light wall or ceiling and a Bluetooth speaker. Stick a Flashy, a small color filter, on each flashlight LED and aim the light at the ceiling and walls – never into anyone's eyes. Every phone becomes a colored spotlight. For lots of spots in every color, go for the Collectors Edition (21 Flashys in 7 colors); to get started, try Fairy Lights.

What do you need to make DIY disco lights?

A disco needs two things: music and colored light. You usually have both with you already. Your phone flashlight is a small, strong light source – add a color filter and it turns into party light.

Your shopping list is short:

  • Phones: yours, your friends', or an old phone from the drawer
  • Flashys: one Flashy per phone, stuck on the flashlight LED
  • A Bluetooth speaker for the playlist
  • A light wall or ceiling as the "screen" for the light

A Flashy is 7 mm small. No app for the color, no pairing. It fits all smartphones, iPhone and Android. With a large LED ring, you stick on several Flashys – every pack contains several filters.

How to make disco lights at home: the 7-step guide

1. Pick your room and clear it

Living room, shared kitchen or basement – all you need is room to dance and a light surface. Move trip hazards and cables out of the way. Ceiling light off, curtains closed.

2. Collect your light sources

Every phone is a spotlight. For a small room, two or three are often enough; for a bigger space, add more. Ideas for what else an old phone can do: Uses for Old Phones.

3. Choose a color scheme

Pick a mood:

  • Neon look: Power Pink, Mystic Violet and Sky Breeze (turquoise) from Fairy Lights
  • Warm & funky: Flame Red, Solar Orange and Royal Gold from Sunset Lights
  • Full palette: all 7 colors from the Collectors Edition – three Flashys each of Flame Red, Solar Orange, Royal Gold, Power Pink, Mystic Violet, Sky Breeze and Emerald Green
  • Surprise: Mystery Light with seven different Flashys – with a bit of luck, a rare Aurora Flashy is inside

4. Stick on the Flashys

  1. Clean the LED
  2. Peel the Flashy off the carrier card
  3. Stick it on the center of the LED
  4. Flashlight on

5. Set up your spots

  • Ceiling spot: lay a phone flat on a shelf or on the floor in a corner, LED facing up. The ceiling fills with color.
  • Wall spots: lean phones sideways against books and angle the light at the wall. Spread them across different corners and the room feels bigger.
  • Color mix: let two patches of light overlap a little and see how the colors look together on your wall.

Important: every phone stays uncovered and in the open. Don't cover it, don't put it inside a container, and place it where it can't fall.

6. Sound on

Connect the Bluetooth speaker and start the playlist. Tip: one color per phase of the night – slower songs in Royal Gold, fast ones in Power Pink or Sky Breeze.

7. Color switch on the chorus (optional)

Switch colors on the chorus: first Power Pink, then Sky Breeze, then Royal Gold – everyone aims their phone at the wall or ceiling. Steady light, no flashing.

Safety: Never shine the light into anyone's eyes. Small parts (7 mm): adults stick the Flashys on and keep them out of reach of small children. You can reuse a Flashy a few times if you peel it off carefully and stick it onto a dust-free surface.

Which DIY disco setup fits you?

Situation Setup Pack
Small room, spontaneous 2–3 phones on ceiling and wall Fairy Lights or Sunset Lights
House party, basement Several spots, every color Collectors Edition
Crew in one color All phones the same Friends Pack

For a crew color: the Friends Pack (5 Flashys in one color) is enough for five. Colors: Flame Red, Royal Gold, Power Pink, Mystic Violet, Sky Breeze (turquoise), Ocean Blue (deep blue) and Emerald Green – no Solar Orange.

To be honest: for a big hall with lots of guests, a proper lighting rig is more reliable. For a living room, shared flat or basement, your DIY setup does the job.
