Phone with a warm gold Flashy Hue glow next to a burning candle – flameless candlelight

Flameless Candle Hack: Turn an Old Phone into a Cozy "Candle"

Short answer: One of the simplest candle alternatives is an old phone with a warm color filter on the flashlight LED – ideally Royal Gold from Sunset Lights. Stick the Flashy on the center of the LED, turn the flashlight on, and bounce the light off a light wall. No wax, no open flame. Real candles still win when flames are allowed and supervised. Ready-made LED candles are usually better for all-night kids' rooms.

Why people look for candle alternatives

Open flames look cozy, but they are banned or risky in many places: dorms, hostels, some rentals, tents in dry seasons, homes with pets or toddlers. At the same time, autumn and winter make people crave warm light – not the harsh white of a phone flashlight.

Flameless options fill that gap.

An old-phone "candle" is a fast, low-cost mood hack – and a second life for a phone in the drawer – not a dedicated overnight night light.

Honest comparison: real candle vs. LED candle vs. phone + Flashy

Criterion Real candle Ready-made LED candle Old phone + warm Flashy
Open flame yes no no
Coziness / mood very high (flicker, scent possible) good to very good (some flicker) warm color, no real flicker
Effort light, watch, snuff buy once, battery/charge 3 seconds to stick, flashlight on
Cost low per piece often higher per piece filter pack + spare phone
Overnight use risky / often banned designed for it not meant for it
Kids' room / dorm rules often unsuitable usually the better pick fine as supervised mood light

When each wins

  • Real candle: when you want flicker, scent and ritual – and flames are allowed and watched.
  • LED candle: when you need the same light every night (kids' room, office Advent wreath).
  • Phone + Flashy: when you want warm light now, already own an old phone, and do not want another gadget.

How to make a flameless phone candle (step by step)

You need: an old smartphone (or your current one) and a warm color filter – ideally Royal Gold, or Solar Orange / Flame Red from Sunset Lights (Flame Red, Solar Orange, Royal Gold).

  1. Clean the LED. Wipe dust and fingerprints off the flash on the back of the phone.
  2. Peel the Flashy. Lift the 7 mm filter off the carrier card (two layers: color + grip).
  3. Stick it centered. Place it on the middle of the LED. Flashy fits all smartphones; on rare large LED rings (~3 cm), stick several Flashys – every pack includes multiple filters.
  4. Turn the flashlight on. Use Control Center / Quick Settings.
  5. Soften the beam. Point the flashlight at a light wall or ceiling so it reads as candle glow, not a spotlight.

When you peel the filter off again: Flashys peel off without residue. For normal flash photos, just remove it.

Which warm color fits which mood?

  • Royal Gold: closest to classic candlelight – first pick among candle alternatives on a phone.
  • Solar Orange: a bit livelier; great for fall evenings and balcony light.
  • Flame Red: redder and more dramatic; better for mood or Halloween than "tea light".

All three come in Sunset Lights. For dreamy room light instead (Power Pink, Mystic Violet, turquoise Sky Breeze), try Fairy Lights – that is mood lighting, not a classic candle stand-in.

FlashyHue (Centropy Lights UG, haftungsbeschränkt): designed in Stuttgart, born in Namibia (Fractal Festival, Spitzkoppe). No app, no extra battery, no pairing.

Which solution fits you?

  • Dorm or rental with a candle ban: phone + Royal Gold bounced off a light wall, or a proper LED candle for nightly use.
  • Kids' room: choose a dedicated LED night light first. Use a phone candle only with an adult present; small parts (7 mm).
  • Camping / festival tent: Flame Red or Solar Orange on the phone – warm light without an open flame.
  • Date night at home: Royal Gold, light bounced off the wall; real candles only if you keep them in sight.
  • Several "candles" on the table: a few spare phones with Sunset Lights, or matching colors in the Friends Pack (no Solar Orange).

Safety – short and clear

  • Never look straight into the LED or shine it into anyone's eyes.
  • Kids: Flashys are small parts (7 mm) – adult supervision only.

FAQ

What are the simplest candle alternatives at home? A ready-made LED candle is often simplest. If you already have an old phone, a warm stick-on color filter on the flashlight (e.g. Royal Gold) is the fastest DIY option without buying another device.

Can an old phone really work as a candle? Yes, as mood lighting: Flashy on the LED, flashlight on, light bounced or diffused. For every-night use, an LED candle is usually more practical.

Which Flashy color looks most like candlelight? Royal Gold. Solar Orange and Flame Red from Sunset Lights are warmer alternatives with a different character.

Can it replace a real candle? As mood lighting, yes: no wax and no open flame – handy where candles are banned. Still supervise children.

Does the filter leave sticky residue? No. Flashys peel off without residue. For normal flash photos, peel the filter off.

Does it work on iPhone and Android? Yes. Flashy fits all smartphones. The flashlight LED stays technically white – the color comes only from the filter.

Where can I get the filters? Directly in the FlashyHue store. See all packs in the phone flashlight color filters collection.
